We are pleased to announce the results of the Build Africa (Excel for Charity) Poetry Competition judged by Mandy Pannett.

The Competition.

This poetry competition is in aid of Build Africa - a UK Charity which works exclusively in rural areas of Uganda and Kenya to help young people escape poverty through education and business enterprise. Their vision is for every young person in Africa to fulfil their potential and to make a difference. The aim of the competition is to give writers from all over the world a chance to pitch their skills against those of their peers with the aim of achieving literary glory,  but in doing so, they also financially assist Build Africa.

 

Competition Information

 

Subject: Poems may be on any subject, in English Language, and typed.

Length: Maximum 40 lines per poem

Entry Fees: £3.00 per poem or £12.00 for 5 poems

(Build Africa will receive one third of the net entry fees)*

First Prize: £150.00

Second Prize: £75.00

Third Prize: £35.00

Highly Commended Entries: The top three poems will be published in the Excel for Charity website, and subject to the quality of entries, we may publish an associated anthology compiled and edited by the judge Mandy Pannett and Nnorom Azuonye

Entry deadline: 25th April 2010 (Online entries will be accepted up till midnight, April 30th 2010)

How to Enter (by post)

 

  1. Poems must be in English language and typed.

  2. Author’s name and address MUST NOT appear on any of the poetry pages as the judge has to read them as anonymous entries.

  3. Write your name, E-mail Address, and Postal Address on a separate sheet of paper and put the paper in a sealed envelope.

  4. Write "Build Africa 2010" followed by the TITLE(S) of your poem(s) on the back of the sealed envelope.

  5. Make cheques or Postal Orders (in GB£ only) payable to EASTERN LIGHT EPM INTERNATIONAL

  6. Send your poems, the envelope (in which you have placed the paper with your contact details), and your entry fee to:

You may also enter Online**

 

International/online entrants may enter by e-mail and pay entry fees by Paypal. To enter by this method please follow these steps:

  1. Select your entry option in the drop-down menu on the Paypal Button below and make the applicable payment.

  2. After making your payment, you will be given a Transaction ID or Receipt Number by Paypal. Make a note of the Transaction ID.

  3. Submit your poems to easternlightepm@gmail.com as a Word or rtf attachment. In the subject line, type BUILD AFRICA POETRY 2010 Followed by your Transaction ID.

  4. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of poems within 24 hours.

Terms & Conditions:

  1. You may enter as many poems as you want.

  2. The decision of the judge is final, and no communication will be entered into.

  3. For transparency, Eastern Light makes it clear that we shall retain what is left from the entry fees after a third of the net entry fees has been donated to the charity, the prize money and adjudication fees paid, to cover administration and promotional costs.

  4. The definition of Net Entry Fees is what is retained after Paypal transaction charges. (This is usually no more than about 31p off every £3.00 entry or 67p on a £12.00 entry.)*

  5. In the event that there are too few entries to pay the prize money from the entry fees, we will forgo our share of the money and if necessary contribute our own funds to ensure the prize money is guaranteed.

  6. Prize money will be paid within 28 days of the announcement of the results.

  7. Prize winners will be paid by the method they paid for their entries. Unless we are otherwise advised.

About the judge

Mandy Pannett lives in West Sussex where she is a creative writing tutor. She also supports several local writing groups and runs an Arts Cafe. Her first poetry collection 'Boy's Story' was issued, with original music, as a CD. Two further collections have been published by Oversteps Books - 'Bee Purple' and 'Frost Hollow'. Her work has been widely published in small press magazines and online. She is currently working on a new collection. She has also won prizes in several UK writing competitions.
