JUDGE'S REPORT
Quantity was in my mind when I received all the entries for the competition, but diversity too, with a range of styles and an even bigger one of subjects.
Everyone had plenty to say for themselves, which is surely the first requisite for being a writer, but obviously some were able to convey their messages better than others, or had a better poetic technique. But I’d like to confirm that all your messages got through to me and choosing winners was a difficult task. Eventually after a number of readings, I managed to separate approximately 50 poems for further deliberation, and from these publishable poems choose winners.
My First Prize winner, though rather sad, has good use of simile and metaphor, and a sustained storyline. “Blue Hyacinths” expertly intermingles a new birth, a fresh flowering, with the death of a loved one.
“I.E.D.” is my second choice. It is very different, slightly surreal, topical, and well-written, without a wasted word.
“Empties” is third. A simple poem about delivering milk, which invokes the atmosphere, the sights and sounds, of early morning streets, and has an unexpected ending.
I believe that we have enough well-written poems to include in the anthology and here are the poems in a suggested order of appearance in the book:
I would like to commend two poems about birth, “My Never-Sister” and “Confinement”, the first about a miscarriage and the second comparing prison and being locked-up in the womb. “Centurion” which deals with an officer in the Roman army that feels he must love his enemies, also deserves a Commendation Certificate.
Thank you all for letting me see your work. Keep writing!
Geoff Stevens.
Notice regarding the anthology.
Please note that the judge of the competition, Geoff Stevens has recommended the 49 poems above for inclusion in the anthology. The list as recommended by him is not final. As publisher and co-editor of the anthology, I will now take a look at the poems myself and we may agree to add to or remove from the list. The final list, and the names of the authors will appear on this page by the 15th of May, 2009. If you would like to receive the final list by e-mail, please join our mailing list here.
